Why Hire a Travel Companion?

“Having a companion when traveling can help make the experience more enjoyable and provide more safety. It’s especially important when you’re elderly.” - Sidney Poitier

Several years ago my father set out on an international trip to meet up with my brother and his family in Italy. There were some early signs of Alzheimers but he was functioning well - driving and doing all typical daily activities on his own (we did have an app to track him in case he took a drive or walk and got lost but it was rarely needed). The plan was set for him to fly nonstop from Seattle to Rome. Travel day arrived and he was dropped off at SeaTac airport; we checked in a short bit later and were so happy to hear he was settled and sipping a Starbucks on the other side of security. The flight took off on time and things were going great. Until we checked the app discovered he was still at the airport. He was so close - but had sat down to relax at the wrong gate and didn’t even know he had missed his flight! Frantic calls to the airline resulted in a hefty penalty to rebook, a later flight that included a plane change in New York, and finally arrival in Italy. We have no idea how he managed getting across the New York airport, what his anxiety level may have been, or how he eventually ended up at the right hotel in Rome several hours later than expected (and quite a chunk of cash missing). In hindsight I wish we had realized the stress, cost and potential dangers in sending him off on his own. However, once he connected with family he had the trip of a lifetime!
